A kitchen sponge starts falling apart before most people notice. The edges go stringy, it stops holding its shape, and it takes longer and longer to actually shift the grease off a pan. A brush head goes the same way — the bristles splay out and soften until they're pushing food around instead of scrubbing it off.
Most people keep using both well past this point, because there's no obvious moment that says "replace me." There should be.
Why Cool Frank exists
Sian and Bec started Cool Frank in Brisbane in late 2019, wanting a sink set-up that was practical and good-looking. The practical part meant admitting that some parts wear out — a brush head, a sponge, a cloth — while the handle and the caddy don't need to. So the brush was built to take a new head instead of being thrown out whole, and the Clean Team Reload was built to keep the wearing parts arriving before anyone has to notice they're overdue.
When to actually swap each one
The brush: replace the head, keep the handle
Cool Frank's brush heads screw onto the handle with a brass fixing, in packs of two, so when the bristles go soft it's the head that gets replaced, not the whole brush. The handle is built to keep going; the replacement heads are the part that wears.
The sponge: weekly is the general rule
Standard hygiene guidance is to replace a kitchen sponge weekly — it's the part of the kitchen that stays wettest for longest, so it's where bacteria builds up fastest. Cool Frank's sponges are cellulose, a plant fibre, so they're biodegradable, and they ship flat-packed and expand once they hit water. The sponge reload keeps a fresh set of three on hand.
The cloth: when it stops drying, it stops working
A microfibre cloth doesn't wear out as fast as a sponge, but it should still be swapped once it stays damp, smells after drying, or stops lifting water and picking up crumbs the way it used to. Cool Frank's cloths are microfibre, non-scratch and lint-free, in a set of three — grey, black and white — so there's always a dry one in rotation, and the cloth reload tops the set back up.

Straight answers
How often should you replace a kitchen sponge?
Standard hygiene guidance is weekly. A sponge holds water longer than almost anything else in the kitchen, which makes it the fastest place for bacteria to build up.
How do you know when a dish brush needs a new head?
When the bristles splay out and go soft, or when it stops actually shifting grease and starts just pushing it around. At that point it's cleaning less and spreading more.
Do microfibre cloths scratch glass?
No. Microfibre is a soft, non-scratch weave, so it's safe on glass cooktops, glassware and non-stick pans.
Can you buy just the brush head, or do you need a whole new brush?
Just the head. Cool Frank's brush heads screw onto the handle with a brass fixing and come in packs of two, so the handle stays and only the worn part gets replaced.
